Ditsworthy Warren House

Ditsworthy Warren is an isolated cottage two miles from the village of Sheepstor and overlooking an early section of the River Plym. Warren Houses came to prominence in the 18th Century when rabbits were farmed on open moorland providing a source of meat for the population and skins for clothing.

The property was being used as a dwelling house up until the 1950’s at which time, with no mains water, electricity or gas, the last inhabitant was a widow in her 90’s who lived in what was described as a ‘Spartan manner’. Since then the army has used it as a ‘stone tent’ and the Planning Authority consider this to have constituted a change of use.

ADG were instructed to prepare a full Planning Application, associated documentation and reports for a Change of Use back to residential.

ADG’s work was interrupted when Stephen Spielberg decided to use the property and its immediate surroundings as a film set for the forthcoming film ‘War Horse’, which is expected to be in cinemas this Autumn.

The film company took over the property for a period of 8 weeks during which time dozens of articulated lorries full of film set equipment gathered around the property together with numerous cherry pickers. It took 6-weeks to completely overclad the building and turn it into a thatched farmhouse. This included additions to chimneys, bay windows and a completely fictitious barn constructed almost entirely of expanded polystyrene foam with decoration!
