RYA Building Five storey building on brownfield site providing training and accommodation facilities for the Royal Yachting Association including 24 twin bedrooms, office, commercial, reception, bar and restaurant accommodation. The building will be used in conjunction with the nearby National Sailing Academy. The building is the first phase of the wider Castle Court Masterplan and provides an important training resource for the British sailing team in the run up to the 2012 Olympic sailing events to be held in Weymouth. It opened in January 2010. The building has been designed to optimise energy conservation and sustainability. Every aspect of the design has been considered, including locally sourced materials, sustainable transport policy and ground source heat pumps, which will connect to a site wide system once the full masterplan is complete. The Castle Court development will create a new context for this important site and has been designed to achieve a sustainable community by including residential, retail, leisure and employment provision. The landowner, the South West of England Regional Development Agency, required the building to achieve a BREEAM excellent rating. As such the design team worked closely with a BREEAM Assessor throughout the design process to ensure that as many sustainable and energy saving features as possible were considered and incorporated. |
