The refurbishment of the student refectory was a concept piece of work by ADG designers that was realised by the contractor within a D&B contract. The brief was to create a space that would appeal to a young group of users and provide an updated, contemporary feel at the heart of the college. The lively colour scheme was conceived to tie in with the remaining fabric of the building, such as the metal windows and to appeal to the students for use in the daytime and for evening social events.

New flooring had to be a floating floor solution over the original parquet timber to allow for future changes, but to enhance the user experience with softer feel, modern carpet and non-slip vinyl in food and drink areas.

A flexible space was created for multi-activities, such as music and dance events, but principally as a large refectory. A major part of the eye catching new scheme is the removal of the old dropped ceiling and replacing it with acoustic shapes and new modern lighting suspended from a darkened soffit above.

The scheme was achieved within a very short design phase programme and to a limited budget to ensure that the scheme was in place for the new academic year.
