Masterplanning

A masterplan provides a framework for developing a site that aims to maximise its social and economic value, while minimising financial risk to the client and disruption to the wider community. Whether a tool for regenerating a rundown area or for meeting new needs where values are already high, it must take account of the physical and economic context.

The scale of masterplanning means it needs ongoing consultations with planners and local stakeholders are well as a responsive relationship with the client. Success depends on establishing an appropriate choice of plots and functions for the area, and integrating them within a network of public spaces and streets which themselves link into the surroundings and transport facilities.

An effective masterplan will set out possibilities that will evolve according to market conditions and will enhance the physical environment and pattern of uses across a whole area to create additional value.
