Berkeley Square This striking building was one of the first Plymouth City Centre rebuilding projects after the war to create a banking centre with traditional banking hall and supporting offices all contained in a 3 storey structure. The original design was for a 5 storey building but funds were not sufficient to complete the full proposal. ADG were appointed to convert and extend the building to create a mixed use centre combining a restaurant and bar in the banking hall and adjoining ground floor area with apartments on the upper levels. The final solution achieved 24 2-bed apartments, 611m2 bar, occupied by HaHa Bar & Grill, and a 220m2 restaurant, occupied by Morgans Italian Restaurant. The additional floors have achieved a good public response to what was an adventurous proposal for the planning department at the time and has become a recognised and popular venue, it has been quoted as an example for several subsequent planning proposals by ADG and other consultants. The building was listed during the planning process and the consequences were incorporated into the design and included the fire strategy, building regulation and design principles. The mezzanine and the listed ceiling in the old banking hall were retained. |
