The Avenue This important mixed-use development on the junction between The Avenue and Queen Street strives to breath new life into the original buildings on the site whilst reinstating the rear courtyard by the introduction of a new contemporary form. The old telephone exchange building, although not of high architectural worth, is retained and given new life by the glass rooftop extension, whilst the sweeping form of the upper level, cedar clad form, provides the courtyard and Lemon Place with an increased amount of natural surveillance. The accommodation includes a variety of apartments and a restaurant onto Queen Street. The chosen approach demonstrates that old, unloved buildings can be made into desireable places to live and socialise. Overall the development provided the Architects Design Group with the opportunity to create a high quality and intimate architectural space within the heart of Newton Abbot. |
